School Turnaround is the Signature Program of the Rensselaerville Institute. School Turnaround expresses what we have learned at The Institute about outcomes and how to achieve them. It embodies all of the core principles of the Institute and includes these outcome elements:
A clear strategy that offers comparative advantage over many education improvement programs. That strategy is the discipline of turnaround—a way to hit failure in public schools with enough force to dislodge it.
A strong focus on targets and ways to communicate them. In our schools all activity is aligned with hitting time-compressed targets of specific academic achievement.
A use of milestones—predictive factors during the school year—that are critical to tracking to success and making course corrections. Part of tracking is use of data available in “real time” at the level of participants and those who help them—in this case teachers and individual students.
A focus on individuals as a key to effective enterprise—in this case principals. We show in this program how betting on persons can be more powerful than betting on plans.
