Spotlight on Atlanta Sparkplugs
Atlanta residents bring new opportunities to children
Between January and July 2017, local residents led seven Community Sparkplug projects to increase life chances for children in Atlanta, Georgia. The projects included reading skills, theater training, plus programs to introduce tennis, aqua-farming and entrepreneurship to young people.
The Rensselaerville Institute helped the individuals leading the projects—people who we call Community Sparkplugs to achieve results they set for themselves. Community Sparkplugs is an intervention designed to spark change and develop the leaders and innovators who exist in every community. It operates in tandem with TRI’s School Turnaround intervention, now underway in Atlanta Public Schools.
In six months, 503 children started to read longer or learned a new skill. The Rensselaerville Institute has renewed funding for five of the projects and will launch 15 new Sparkplug projects in September 2017.
