For more than six decades, The Rensselaerville Institute has evolved to meet the needs of the present. Since our founding in 1963, we've partnered with schools, nonprofits, and civic agencies to strengthen communities, improve student outcomes, and expand opportunities for young people. Our work has always involved combining rigorous strategy with hands-on implementation partnership. 

 

As a frequent convener of practitioners, thinkers, doers, community members and cross sector leaders, we were once known as “The Think Tank with Muddy Boots.”  

 

As a community partner, TRI has supported local community leaders in improving more than 300 communities across 32 states nationwide using the TRI Results Framework. Our grassroots- on the ground- initiatives develop and build capacity in local leaders. One example is our work with the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma where we partnered to build 25 homes and a 16-mile water line providing clean water. 

 

As an organization focused on educational leadership and school and district improvement, our School Turnaround Portfolio has supported more than 300 schools across 40 districts in transforming leadership capacity and student academic achievement.

For 2026 and beyond, our work to improve life chances for young people will continue as we persist in adapting and innovating to meet the needs of schools and communities nationwide.
